Residents of Katunga and Musaana, both located in Nyarushanje Sub-county, Rukungiri District, are expressing their frustration over the lack of electricity in their areas, despite nearby neighborhoods being connected.

Sempa Narris Rwakana, the VHT coordinator for Ruyonza Parish, highlighted that many years have passed since electricity was installed in neighboring areas, yet their communities have been neglected. He explained that several trading centers in the subcounty are falling behind in development due to the absence of power.

Sempa added that they have repeatedly petitioned the government to provide electricity to their communities, but their efforts have been in vain. The lack of electricity is hindering the growth of businesses that rely on power, such as welding, salons, popcorn production, and bars.

Speaking on the matter, former Ruyonza Parish Councilor, Mr. Biryomumisho Pauson Kajere, questioned why most villages in the subcounty were excluded during the implementation of the Rural Electrification Programme. He noted that while wealthier residents rely on solar power, it is unsustainable for the long term. Kajere emphasized the importance of electricity to add value to agricultural products and enable local communities to engage in small-scale businesses.

He also pointed out that even the neighboring areas with electricity face frequent power outages, which is becoming a widespread problem. Kajere urged area Members of Parliament to intensify their efforts in lobbying for electricity connections to the region.
