Residents of Katagata parish in Mayanga sub-county, Mitoma District, have raised long-standing concerns over both electricity and water scarcity challenges in the area.
Despite having fewer protected clean water sources in the area, reports from local leaders and residents confirm that a huge number of people compete with animals to access water for home use from ponds, stagnant rivers, and wetlands, which has led to the outbreak of waterborne diseases.
Speaking to Boona Radio, the Katagata parish LC2 chairperson, Mr. Polly Mubangizi, said that although a few residents access clean water, a very high percentage of the remaining population have no other option but to run to ponds, rivers, and wetlands to get water for home use.
On the issue of electricity, Mr. Mubangizi reported that in the middle of March 2025, electric poles were brought into the area, but to date, wires and transformers have not yet been brought to complete the project. However, some residents of Katagata parish paid money from their own pockets to fund the electricity extension project after realizing they were excluded from the extension programs.
Meanwhile, shockingly, as an outcome, some residents are scared and distressed that the project will not be completed and might be a scam, or that they might be left behind during the project completion, according to statements made by some politicians who were contesting with Hon. Donozio Kahonda, the area MP who lobbied for the project.
Byaruhanga Psyrus, a resident from the area and also a beneficiary, said that it is true that only electric poles were brought, and they are still waiting for wires and transformers to complete the project. He added that he is not sure about the ongoing speculations that the project was a scam since all areas that received poles are still waiting for completion without any special treatment, despite some residents funding the extension of electric poles themselves.
Meanwhile, the Katagata parish councilor, Mr. Josephat Twijukye, told Boona Radio that as both a beneficiary resident and local leader, he is confident that the electricity project will be completed and extended in every area that already has electric poles without favoritism. He therefore called for confidence and patience from the dissatisfied residents in Katagata parish and Rwanja East parish, who are expressing dissatisfaction.
Speaking about water scarcity, he gave hope through the Nexus Green Water Project, which has already started building a large water source and a distribution tank system in Mayanga parish. He said that cells like Mayanga D, Runginya A, Mayanga Central, and other areas are going to access clean water soon.
