Local leaders in Kanungu District are calling for urgent government intervention to address the deteriorating state of health services in the area.
Speaking in an interview with Boona Radio, Kyarimpa Prudence, the councillor representing Kihihi and Nyanga sub-counties, expressed concern over the poor state of healthcare despite other existing challenges such as electricity shortages, poor road networks, and water scarcity.
Kyarimpa noted that several sub-counties in Kanungu still lack Health Centre III facilities. She cited Nyanga Sub-county as an example, which currently has only one Health Centre II, limiting access to essential medical services. As a result, many residents are forced to travel long distances to seek treatment, a situation that continues to strain communities.
She further highlighted the issue of understaffing in health facilities across the district. At Kihihi Health Centre IV, it is alleged that only one midwife is available to attend to more than four expectant mothers at a time, a situation she described as risky and in need of immediate attention from the relevant authorities.
Despite these challenges, Kyarimpa commended the government for ongoing efforts to improve services in the district. She pointed to developments such as the fencing of Kihihi Health Centre IV, support to the refugee camp, and improvements in the education sector. She expressed optimism that the remaining gaps, particularly in the health sector, will be addressed.
