Tragedy struck last night when six people were involved in a fatal motorcycle accident along the Rukungiri–Ntungamo road near Iterero town, close to Fountain Junior Primary School.

The accident occurred at around 10:10 pm when four students from Kahengye Parents Secondary School allegedly escaped from the school premises after evening preps and hired a motorcycle, registration number UMA 702BP, to travel to Nyamunuka town. On their return, they collided with another motorcycle, UGD 386R, ridden by Nuwashaba Reagan, who was carrying 16-year-old Gumoshabe Victorian from Kakibaya, Southern Division, Kebison Town Council.

The collision happened as the two riders attempted to dodge the numerous potholes along the road, which has been flagged as dangerous by locals. Both riders—Amupire Odurike, a Senior 5 student and Head Prefect at Kahengye Parents Secondary School, and Nuwashaba Reagan—died instantly at the scene.

Four others sustained serious injuries. Tudyaguma Genious, the C/P Chairperson of the School Council, was initially taken to Nyakibale Hospital and later referred to Mbarara Referral Hospital. Other students, Musiimenta Elias, Akadwanaho Nelson, and Gumoshabe Victorian, were rushed to Divine Mercy Clinic in Rwashamaire. Victorian’s condition worsened, prompting her transfer to Mbarara Referral Hospital for further treatment.

GESSO Nyamunuka Town Council promptly informed Rwashamaire Police, who collected the bodies and impounded the motorcycles for further investigations. The deceased were taken to Rwashamaire HC IV Mortuary.

Yassin Katafa Byamukama, Speaker of Nyamunuka Town Council and NRM flag bearer, condemned the poor state of the road, highlighting that potholes along this stretch and near Bwongyera Girls School have claimed several lives. He called on the Ministry of Works and Transport to urgently intervene and repair the road to prevent further accidents.

Police investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the collision.
