Authorities in Kabale District and the Ministry of Works and Transport have initiated the construction of Kitibya Bridge and rehabilitating the 6.8-kilometer Kitibya-Mishundo-Kabanyonyi road in Kyanamira Sub County. The project, valued at 2.2 billion shillings, aims to improve connectivity in the area.
This road, linking to the old Kabale road in Rwenkima village, connects several villages, including Kitibya, Kabira 2, Kyakagoye, Kategure, Mishundo A, Mishundo B, and Rwiraguju, to the Kabanyonyi trading center.
At the launch and site handover to the contractor, Ndorwa East Member of Parliament Hon. Wilfred Niwagaba, the chief guest, highlighted that he and Kabale District Woman Member of Parliament Hon. Catherine Atwakiire had successfully lobbied for the 2.2 billion shillings from the government. Under the District Urban and Community Access Roads project of the Ministry of Works and Transport, this funding is intended to enhance road access in the area. Niwagaba reminded the locals that no compensation would be provided for damages and expressed hope that the project would boost agriculture and businesses, urging cooperation with the contractor.
Hon. Catherine Atwakiire Ndamira expressed optimism that the bridge and road construction would facilitate the transportation of agricultural products and other goods. She encouraged residents to continue participating in government programs aimed at poverty reduction.
Engineer Musa Mwine, the project manager from the Ministry of Works and Transport, outlined the project’s scope, which includes site clearance, heavy grading, graveling, drainage works, expanding the road to 7 meters wide, erecting project identification signboards, and constructing a box culvert. The project, awarded to Kwed Construction Limited, will be completed within a year.
The Kabale District Principal Assistant Secretary, representing the Chief Administrative Officer, expressed hope that residents would not seek compensation, noting that landowners had signed consent forms allowing the use of their land. He warned the contractor against substandard work and stressed the importance of timely completion.
Bushenyi District Woman Member of Parliament Annet Mugisha commended Hon. Atwakiire and Hon. Niwagaba for their successful lobbying efforts for the project.
