Residents of Mafuuga Parish, Rutenga Subcounty, Kanungu District are expressing their dismay over the inadequate roads and absence of electricity, which are hindering the area’s development.

According to Banard Bakesigaki, the councilor for Mafuuga Parish and secretary for social services in Rutenga Subcounty, electricity poles and cables were installed three years ago, but no power has been supplied yet. Some of the poles have begun to deteriorate. This lack of electricity is severely impacting the community, particularly in terms of education for their children.

Numerous small-scale business owners in the area are feeling the effects of the electricity shortage. They are forced to travel long distances in search of welding services, stationery, and milling services, incurring significant transportation costs. This situation is eating into their profits and affecting their businesses negatively.

Despite numerous attempts to engage with relevant authorities, no progress has been made. In the absence of electricity, residents rely on wax candles, lamps, and small generators at night, which is both costly and unsustainable for their businesses.

Additionally, Banard highlighted the lack of access to essential services such as healthcare, education, and proper roads. The roads, particularly the one from Katindo Karuhanga to Nyamasiizi, are nearly impassable, compounded by the challenging mountainous terrain. This makes transportation difficult for both travelers and farmers, resulting in losses for farmers dealing with perishable goods like matoke and tomatoes.

Even boda boda operators are struggling to navigate the poor roads, further impacting the local economy and agriculture. Despite presenting their challenges to the council, little action has been taken, with promises made but not fulfilled. The government’s pledges to improve service delivery have not materialized, leaving the community disillusioned with the lack of progress.
