Residents and the business community of Rutenga Subcounty, Kanungu District, are raising concerns over the deteriorating condition of local roads, which have become impassable due to heavy rains.

The rains, which began last week, have severely damaged the Rutenga–Katojo–Kirimbe and Rutenga–Mafuuga–Nyamasizi roads, disrupting services and hindering business activities.

According to Byabasheija Bonny, Chairperson of LC2 Katojo Parish, and Banard Bakesigaki, Mafuuga Parish Councilor, traffic on the Rutenga–Katojo road has been brought to a standstill due to landslides blocking the route. They also noted that many recently installed culverts have been broken or washed away by the flowing water.

Residents and leaders are appealing to the government and relevant authorities for urgent intervention, warning that continued inaction will further affect businesses and essential services.

Joab Kamusimiire, Chairperson of LC3 Rutenga Subcounty, added that the situation is worsening, particularly on the Katindokaruhanga–Nyamasizi road, which was poorly constructed without culverts, drainage channels, or proper road surfacing, causing significant challenges during the rainy season. He said that, together with District Councilor Hon. Buroosa, they have written to the District Works Committee requesting urgent attention to the matter.

Hon. Buroosa Ainembabazi, the District Councilor for Rutenga Subcounty and member of the Works Committee, acknowledged the challenges and assured that the committee is aware of the situation. He said repairs will be carried out soon, as construction work is ongoing on these roads and the necessary budget and funds are available.

He cautioned against activities that damage the roads, particularly by lumberers operating along the roadside, and urged local leaders to reinstate community maintenance initiatives (Burungi Bwansi) to help preserve the roads.
