Ninsiima Evelyn Kikafunda, President of the Green Environment Promotion (GEP), delivered a compelling message to students at the awards ceremony honoring high-performing candidates in the 2023 Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE) at St. Maria Goretti Preparatory School, held at Our Lady of Good Shepherd Rushoroza Cathedral. Kikafunda urged students to prioritize their education over engaging in sexual activities, drawing inspiration from the exemplary life of St. Maria Goretti, an Italian virgin martyr of the Catholic Church.
Highlighting the importance of abstaining from sexual activities, Kikafunda recounted the story of St. Maria Goretti, who chose martyrdom over yielding to sexual advances. She underscored the adverse effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, which witnessed a surge in teenage pregnancies, and encouraged young women to focus on their education as a means to secure a brighter future.
In her address to students who may not have achieved top academic marks, Kikafunda reassured them that grades should not define their potential. Instead, she urged them to nurture confidence and self-esteem for their future endeavors.
Sister Martina Lobur, the headteacher of St. Maria Goretti Preparatory School, also emphasized the importance of perseverance and hard work, advising transitioning students to maintain dedication and determination as they enter secondary school.
Last year, St. Maria Goretti Preparatory School achieved a remarkable feat, with 75 out of 77 candidates attaining first-grade marks in the Primary Leaving Examinations. This accomplishment positioned the school third nationwide and first in the Kabale district.
