The territorial police in Rukungiri are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting of a 44-year-old man named Robert Mugabe. The incident occurred on the night of January 13, 204, at approximately 00:14hrs. The response was prompted by an emergency call from Kembabazi Annet, a resident of Rubambura cell, Kahoko parish, Nyakagyeme sub-County, Rukungiri district.

According to reports, Annet informed the police that her biological son, Robert Mugabe, a former UPDF officer residing at the same address, was armed with a panga and threatening to kill her and his wife, Ngabirano Christine.

Upon reaching Annet’s residence, the responding officers, including No: 28074 SGT Kabeireho Isidore and PC Asiimwe Brian of Rwerere police post, encountered Mugabe behaving violently in the compound. Unaware that Mugabe was armed with a panga, the officers approached him. In an attempt to arrest Mugabe, PC Asiimwe Brian was threatened with a raised panga.

To protect PC Asiimwe Brian, the OC Rwerere police post, Isidore, fired a shot, which unfortunately struck Mugabe, leading to his instant death. The OC post promptly informed the OC Station Rukungiri CPS about the incident for further management.

Following the notification, the Deputy CID Officer and a team were dispatched to the scene. The investigators documented the scene, recovering two pangas and an axe as exhibits. Additionally, a rifle with the serial number UG POL 56131005438-18145, along with 18 rounds of ammunition, was found. The deceased’s body was transported to Rwakabengo HCIII mortuary for postmortem examination.

As part of the ongoing investigation, the suspect is currently in detention, and inquiries are being conducted to gather more information about the incident.
