The territorial police in Kabale have arrested five suspects in connection with a string of crimes involving the vandalism of street lights and theft of solar panels in Kabale Municipality. The suspects, identified as Ampaire Gerevazio (18), Muhereza Martin (28), Mirembe Esera (40), Habomugisha Gerevazio (40), and Arinaitwe Edita (22), were apprehended following a coordinated police operation based on intelligence reports.
According to police spokesperson ASP Elly Maate, the suspects are alleged to have conspired between July and September 2024 to damage government-owned solar-powered street lights, causing significant losses valued at UGX 225,750,000. These incidents occurred in the areas of Makanga, Rwakaraba, Rushoroza, and Nyabikoni within Kabale Municipality.
The arrested individuals reportedly dismantled the street lights during the night and transported the stolen parts to Rubanda District, where they were sold. Police are still searching for Nuwamanya, the alleged husband of Arinaitwe Edita, who is believed to be involved in the theft and remains at large.
During the arrests, police recovered two solar batteries, which were found in the possession of suspects Mirembe Esera and Mushwaza. The arrests were made in Rubanda District, where the suspects were hiding.
This criminal activity has sparked concern among local authorities and residents, as the street lights play a crucial role in ensuring safety and security in the municipality. Several cases have been reported to the police, and investigations are ongoing to apprehend any other suspects involved in the operation.
Municipal officials and local leaders have been working closely with the police to assess the damage and assist in the investigation. Police have vowed to intensify efforts to bring all perpetrators to justice.
Inquiries into the case, registered as Kanungu CRB 674/2024, are still ongoing.
