Police in Kabale District have arrested five suspects for allegedly vandalizing the towers of the 132 KV Mirama-Kabale-Karukara double circuit transmission line.
Kabale District Police Commander, SP Charles Okello, confirmed the arrests and stated that the suspects, whose identities have been withheld to protect the integrity of the investigation, are believed to have acted as transporters for the criminals involved.
He added that the suspects are scheduled to be transferred to Kampala to face charges before the Standards and Utilities Court at Buganda Road today.
SP Okello described the vandalism as a disheartening act that undermines development efforts, especially in a region grappling with power shortages. He revealed that the police had recovered bolts, nuts, and angle bars—marked items that had been stolen from electric pylons in Kaharo and Kyanamira sub-counties.
He issued a stern warning to individuals intent on sabotaging development in the region, stating that their actions would not be tolerated.
The construction of the 132 KV Mirama-Kabale-Karukara double circuit transmission line was carried out by CCC International Engineering Nigeria Limited.
