Police in Kisoro District are handling a complex defilement case where the victim disputes her parents’ claims about her age.

The victim, Lucky Irakiza, is the daughter of James Nteziyaremye from Chihe parish in Nyakinama sub-county and a senior three student at Seseme Blessed Girls Secondary School in Kisoro District.

Inspector of Police Boaz Arinaitwe reported that Irakiza, aged 17, was found at Country Side B Lodge on Saturday, June 29, 2024, with Joel Kitimbo, a resident of Matete in Sembabule District. Following their arrest, both provided statements, but tension arose when Irakiza contested her father’s assertion about her age.

While her father claimed she is 17 years old, Irakiza insisted she is 18 and therefore eligible for marriage to her partner. Police confirmed that Irakiza had been previously suspended from school due to frequent absences. The situation has left police uncertain about their next steps as Irakiza refuses to leave the premises, insisting on staying with Kitimbo.

In a statement to our reporter, Irakiza affirmed her determination to remain at the police station with her partner, stating, “I will wait here for my future husband, no matter what.”

Kitimbo, currently detained at Kisoro Central Police Station, urged authorities to consider Irakiza’s wishes and allow them to proceed with their future plans together.
