Councilors of Ruhinda Sub County, Rukungiri District, have criticized the administration for mismanaging the Ruhinda Sub County Tailoring Institute.
In 2021, Ruhinda Sub County, with support from the AbanyaRuhinda ba Rujumbura group in Kampala, initiated the Ruhinda Sub County Tailoring Institute in the Sub County’s old block to provide tailoring skills to the disadvantaged population, with students contributing functional fees.
During a Council session held on Tuesday, 17th December 2024, Councilors expressed their concerns over the administration’s neglect of the institution, which has resulted in the loss of tailoring machines, an increase in dysfunctional machines, student dropouts, and the failure to organize graduations.
Mable Prince Rukwira, the Kicwamba Parish Councilor, expressed concern over the continued loss of tailoring machines from the institution’s safe room, with the administration remaining unresponsive and unable to provide an explanation.
Dorcus Akampurira, the Burombe Parish Councilor, highlighted the lack of accountability and poor management, which has led to low functional fee contributions from students, incomplete training, and failure to organize graduations.
Ruth Asiimwe, the Ndere Parish Councilor, urged parents to take responsibility for supporting the institution by fully paying the required fees, emphasizing that 10,000/= should not be a burden and that students should not be chased after acquiring skills. She also pointed out the heavy backlog of uncollected certificates due to unpaid fees.
Ismail Mugabe, the Speaker of Ruhinda Sub County, tasked the administration with recovering the lost tailoring machines, stressing the importance of the institution’s safety and the negligence of the responsible officers.
The Ruhinda Sub County Tailoring Institute currently has 29 tailoring machines, facilitated by Hon. Winnie Matsiko, the Ruhinda Sub County representative, and AbanyaRuhinda ba Rujumbura. Of these, 13 are functional, 15 are dysfunctional, and 1 is missing.
