In a devastating turn of events this afternoon, tragedy struck in Kambuga, Kanungu District, as a sand mine collapsed, claiming the lives of two individuals.
The victims who are yet to be identified were diligently working in the mine at the time of the incident.
Reports indicate that one of the deceased was a tipper driver, while the other was identified as the turnboy on the same vehicle.
The identities of the victims yet to be confirmed are being withheld pending notification of their families.
As of now, both bodies remain at the scene as authorities prepare for their retrieval. The police are expected to conduct postmortem examinations as part of the investigation into this heartbreaking event.

This isn’t the first time tragedy has struck at this particular sand mine. In 2021, a similar incident occurred, resulting in the loss of Rodney Aturinda, a 17-year-old senior two student at Bright Future SS Kihiihi. Aturinda lost his life while loading a tipper lorry, and five others sustained injuries in that previous collapse.
The community is reeling from this latest disaster, with concerns raised about the safety measures in place at the mine.
Investigations into the cause of the collapse are underway, as authorities seek to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future.
