Boda boda riders in Nyakishenyi sub-county, Rukungiri district, are urging the government to increase its efforts to improve road infrastructure in Uganda, citing the challenge of poor roads hindering their activities.
During the 3rd annual general meeting of their SACCO, the Nyakishenyi Boda boda Riders Savings and Credit Organization, Charles Atukwase, a boda boda rider, expressed that despite their efforts to initiate developmental projects to enhance their living standards, they are hindered by the poor road conditions, making transportation difficult.
Atukwase emphasized the necessity for the government to consistently maintain roads to facilitate their work effectively. He pointed out several poorly maintained roads in Nyakishenyi sub-county, including Omukiragiro-Nyarugando-Marashaniro-Rujumbura road, Nyakisoroza-bugoro-Kabaranga road, Kabaranga-Kafunjo-Kisa-Omukagaana road, and the Kirimbe-Bikongozo road.
He noted that many of their motorcycles have prematurely deteriorated due to the challenging road conditions, urging authorities to take action to address this issue.
Caleb Niwabiine, the Chairperson of the Board of Governors for Nyakishenyi Boda boda SACCO, reported that the SACCO currently has 869 members, a loan portfolio of 39,683,050 UGX, a share capital of 15,700,000 UGX, and savings worth 19,820,000 UGX. He expressed their intention to recruit more members to the SACCO.
Keith Ainebyoona, the Rukungiri district commercial officer, acknowledged Nyakishenyi as the only location where Boda boda riders have established their own SACCO without external assistance. He encouraged them to prioritize saving, borrowing responsibly, and repaying loans promptly.
