Rt Rev. Onesimus Asiimwe, the Bishop of North Kigezi Diocese, has expressed concern over public servants violating the age limit in service, which he says undermines proper service delivery.

The Bishop delivered this message on Thursday, 30th January 2025, during a Thanksgiving service and baptism held at the residence of Herbert Jackson Mwebesa, the soon-to-retire Chief Finance Officer of Rukiga District. The event took place in Northern A Ward, Western Division, Rukungiri Municipality. The service was conducted with the assistance of the Dean of Emmanuel Cathedral Kinyasano, Ven. Amatsiko Niwegariho.

In his sermon, Bishop Asiimwe highlighted the challenges posed by age-related dishonesty among public servants, which he said also affects the clergy’s efforts to conduct church activities effectively. He called for a mindset change to adhere to the stipulated retirement age and encouraged public servants to strive for a memorable farewell from service.

Hon. Dr. Elisa Rutahigwa, the Member of Parliament for Rukungiri Municipality, urged voters to actively participate in the ongoing register verification exercise to ensure they can elect leaders of their choice. While advocating for his second term in Parliament, he responded to the Bishop’s concerns, expressing confidence that technological advancements have addressed the issue of age falsification.

Nelson Nshangabashaija, the LC5 Chairperson of Kabale District, commended Herbert Jackson Mwebesa for his exceptional service despite injuries sustained in an accident. He appealed for vigilance among drivers, emphasizing that most accidents result from reckless behavior.

Robert Mbabazi Kakwerere, the LC5 Chairperson of Rukiga District, lauded Mwebesa’s contributions during his tenure and urged district authorities to continue engaging him in service delivery, leveraging his expertise.

Sentaro Byamugisha, the Mayor of Kabale Municipality, criticized public servants who defy the age limit, stating that their actions hinder development. He stressed that “old is old” and emphasized the importance of impact-driven leadership.

Herbert Jackson Mwebesa expressed gratitude for the gift of life after surviving a serious accident. He also took pride in serving as a public officer without ever facing prosecution for misuse of funds.

The Thanksgiving service raised over 15,800,000 UGX to support God’s work.

Other notable attendees included Kerere Richard Mutungi, the Treasurer of Mbarara City; Hajj Badru Mayanja, the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) of Kazo District; Sharifa Nakintu Rugasha, the former CAO of Rukiga District; and various politicians and civil servants from Kigezi and beyond.
