Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, the Minister of Information, Communication Technology, and National Guidance, has announced that the Ugandan government is actively striving to ensure affordable smartphones for its citizens in a bid to enhance communication accessibility.
Speaking as the Chief Guest during the 14th Communications Consumer Parliament held at the National Teachers College in Kabale District, Minister Baryomunsi disclosed that negotiations are underway with technology firms to encourage local smartphone manufacturing and assembly.
The initiative aims to drive down costs and improve the availability of smartphones across Uganda, essential tools that facilitate easier access to public services.
The government’s objective is to reduce smartphone prices to 40,000 Shillings, thereby making them more accessible to a broader segment of the population.
