The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has urged local film producers to showcase Africa’s rich cultural heritage in their films to help eliminate negative perceptions about the continent. By highlighting the strength and resilience of African people, filmmakers can contribute to the full decolonization of Africa and shift global perspectives.

Speaking at the Western Region Film Competition Awards held at Ankole Resort and Spur in Ntungamo town, Mr. Fred Otunu, representing the UCC Executive Director, emphasized that while Western countries and China have successfully used films to boost their tourism industries and promote a mindset of success, many African films tend to focus on the negative aspects of their societies.

He highlighted the importance of improving film production quality for global audiences and encouraged the use of modern equipment and artificial intelligence as key tools in advancing the industry.

The third edition of the regional film competitions, organized by UCC, aims to promote the diversity of Uganda’s audiovisual content, empower upcountry filmmakers, expand audiences for local productions, and create business linkages. Similar events have been held in Tororo, Mubende, and Lira.

Presiding over the event, Ntungamo Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Mr. Isaiah Kanyamahane urged filmmakers to use their craft to highlight Uganda’s potential and attract investment and trade opportunities.

Meanwhile, Ntungamo District Chairperson Mr. Mucunguzi Samuel acknowledged the high cost of film production and encouraged filmmakers to seek stronger partnerships with the government, particularly for projects that focus on investment and economic growth.
