Traders along Rukungiri Central Market Street have expressed deep concern over the deteriorating condition of the public toilet located in front of their shops, which is at risk of collapse and leakage.

The commercial toilet, constructed by Rukungiri Municipal Council along Market Street from Karegyesa Road to the Farmers area on a raised road bank, is showing signs of fragmentation. Traders fear that the ongoing damage could result in the bursting of the facility and the uncontrolled flow of waste.

Owen Mwesigwa, a salon service provider, expressed worry about the continued fragmentation of the structure, which he said could lead to a health hazard if not addressed promptly. Similarly, Gilbert Nasasira, a porter at the market, highlighted the multiple neglected potholes around the premises, noting that they pose risks to people carrying goods to the market stalls.

Kiiza Musa, a businessman operating near the toilet, reported experiencing stomach discomfort for the past three weeks due to the foul odor emanating from the toilet tanks, especially during rains. Fred Muganzi, Chairperson of the Central Market Traders Association, criticized the authorities for ignoring petitions submitted by traders during previous meetings aimed at resolving these issues.

Isaiah Tumwesigye, the Town Clerk of Rukungiri Municipal Council, confirmed that the authorities are aware of the problem. He noted that health inspectors and civil engineers are conducting surveys to determine the necessary repairs and prepare Bills of Quantities for rehabilitation.

Traders and residents are calling for urgent action to prevent further deterioration and protect public health in the busy market area.
