Authorities in Rukungiri Municipality on Wednesday launched a tree-planting campaign aimed at revamping nature and combating climate change.

The launch took place at Kagunga Seed Secondary School in the Eastern Division, Rukungiri Municipality, as the school received 200 trees, including fruit and non-fruit trees.

Kushaba Laban Katende, the Senior Environment Officer for Rukungiri Municipality, said that the campaign will be carried out in some schools and health centers to support environmental protection.

He added that the reason for targeting schools is to create awareness among students about the importance of planting trees and protecting the environment.

He highlighted some of the tree species taken to Kagunga Seed School, such as Prunus africana, and fruit trees like mango, orange, jackfruit, avocado, and guava.

He said that the trees in this campaign are expected to provide shade, fruits, and medicine.

Barnard Turyahabwe, the Deputy Mayor of Rukungiri Municipality, stressed the importance of planting trees in fighting climate change, which is currently a challenge in Rukungiri Municipality.

He said that by embracing tree planting, the Municipality can mitigate the effects of bad weather, including strong winds and hailstorms that have affected residents in Rukungiri.

He challenged people in Rukungiri to join the Municipality in this campaign by ensuring that trees are planted on bare lands to revamp green cover.

He also urged the authorities at Kagunga Seed Secondary School to do whatever it takes to ensure the trees grow well.

Amos Gumisiriza, the Head Teacher of Kagunga Seed Secondary School, expressed gratitude to Rukungiri Municipality for selecting their school and providing them with 200 trees, which he said will improve the school’s environment in the future.

He vowed to protect the trees and ensure they grow and benefit the school.
