Health experts in Rukungiri district have cautioned the public about the risks of Coronary Heart Disease (CHD), stressing that the condition can affect anyone regardless of age if they do not take proper care of their health.

According to the Rukungiri District Health Educator, coronary heart disease occurs when blood vessels that transport blood to the heart become less functional, often due to fatty deposits that block the arteries. He explained that individuals with high blood pressure, especially the elderly, are more likely to suffer from the condition, which can lead to strokes.

The educator advised the public to adopt preventive measures such as regular exercise, avoiding frequent consumption of fatty foods like meat, and increasing intake of green vegetables such as dodo, which support healthy heart function.

Adding to the message, Dr. Alex Twekwase, Director of Bukiriro Clinic in Buyanja, noted that the disease results from blockage of blood vessels that supply oxygen to the heart. He highlighted smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and accidents that damage blood vessels as additional risk factors.

Dr. Twekwase identified warning signs of the disease as difficulty in breathing and severe chest pain, urging people to go for regular medical checkups to monitor their blood pressure and overall heart health. He further emphasized the importance of physical activity, healthy dieting, and avoiding harmful habits like smoking and alcohol abuse in order to prevent Coronary Heart Disease.
