The Resident District Commissioner for Rukungiri District, Buroni Kikanshemeza, has called on residents to put aside political differences and focus on work and development following the presidential swearing-in ceremony.
Buroni made the appeal on Monday during a public viewing of the presidential swearing-in ceremony at Rukungiri Main Stadium. The event was held on giant screens and sponsored by Jim Muhwezi, the Minister of Security and Member of Parliament for Rujumbura County.
Hundreds of supporters of the ruling National Resistance Movement dressed in yellow gathered at the stadium to follow the ceremony before participating in a peaceful procession through major streets in Rukungiri Municipality.
Speaking during the event, Buroni acknowledged that the recent electoral period had created divisions among supporters of different political candidates. He, however, urged the public to move beyond politics and unite in promoting development through government programs aimed at improving livelihoods and creating employment opportunities.
The Administrative Secretary for the Rukungiri NRM office, David Mutabanura, expressed appreciation to President Yoweri Museveni for the successful swearing-in ceremony and thanked Minister Jim Muhwezi for organizing the public viewing. He challenged young people to appreciate the achievements made under the current government, noting that many youths had benefited from government support programs targeting employment and development.
Isaac Kaharuza, the political assistant to Minister Jim Muhwezi, commended residents for turning up in large numbers and encouraged the youth to avoid engaging in unnecessary protests against elected leaders. He instead urged them to embrace government development programs and work hard to improve their livelihoods.
Joel Gumisiriza, the newly elected LCIII Chairperson for Southern Division, appealed to the government to expedite infrastructure development projects in Rukungiri Municipality, including works under the USMID program and the upgrading of Rukungiri Main Stadium to support its growing number of public functions.
Meanwhile, Robert Nuwamanya, the NRM youth cadre spokesperson for street children in Rukungiri Municipality, appealed to the government to empower vulnerable youth through job creation initiatives such as workshops and factories. He said such interventions would help address unemployment, reduce idleness, and curb drug abuse among street children.
