Rukungiri District health experts have warned the public about the dangers of sexually transmitted infections, particularly syphilis and gonorrhea.

Speaking to our reporter, Alex Twekwase, Director of Bukiriro Clinic, highlighted gonorrhea and syphilis as diseases that are mostly spread through unprotected sexual contact with an infected person. He emphasized that these diseases can affect both men and women of any age.

Dr. Alex explained the signs of these diseases. He said men often experience pain during urination, while women may notice a foul-smelling discharge and severe itching in the genital area. He further noted that syphilis, especially in young children, can cause delayed growth.

He also explained that these infections can lead to premature births in women and advised anyone showing symptoms to seek medical attention promptly. Pregnant mothers are encouraged to attend antenatal checkups to detect and treat these diseases if found.

Alban Natukunda, Rukungiri District Health Educator, also highlighted that the main causes of gonorrhea and syphilis are unprotected sex with infected individuals and poor hygiene. He warned that using urinals or toilets previously used by infected persons, especially without proper cleaning, can contribute to the spread of these infections.

Alban further explained the potential effects of these diseases. Untreated gonorrhea and syphilis can cause infertility in women and increase the risk of prostate cancer in men. He emphasized that prevention involves practicing safe sex, avoiding sexual contact with multiple partners, and seeking medical treatment promptly if any symptoms arise.
