The Venerable Rev. Canon Steven Nsingwiire of Kabira Archdeaconry has called upon the Government of Uganda and the Ministry of Health to undertake extensive research into the rising cases of cancer in the country, warning that the disease is claiming the lives of many Ugandans at an alarming rate.

Ven. Nsingwiire made the appeal during the send-off ceremony of Mzee Alfred Byekwaso, a respected elder from Kyarugaba Village in Kabira Sub-county, Mitooma District, who succumbed to prostate cancer at the age of 94. Born in 1932, Mzee Byekwaso lived a long life marked by leadership, service, and dedication to his community.

In his sermon, the cleric expressed deep concern over the growing prevalence of cancer, particularly in Mitooma District. He revealed that within just two months, the district has reportedly lost more than six people to different forms of the disease. He described cancer as a serious and emerging public health threat that requires urgent government intervention.

Ven. Nsingwiire urged the Ministry of Health to invest more resources in research to establish the causes behind the increasing cancer cases and to find effective ways of prevention and treatment. He emphasized the need for nationwide awareness, early detection programs, and improved access to specialized care.

Speaking about the deceased, the archdeacon described Mzee Byekwaso as a principled, patient, and understanding man who nurtured many people across different walks of life. He hailed him as a supportive and development-oriented individual who loved the Church and contributed significantly to its growth.

Family members and mourners paid tribute to Mzee Byekwaso for his guidance, wisdom, and unwavering faith. He is survived by four children — three sons and one daughter.

Mzee Alfred Byekwaso was laid to rest at his home in Kyarugaba Village, Kabira Sub-county, Mitooma District.
