Parents have been urged to support and take ownership of schools as the government does its part.

These remarks were made on Wednesday by the Resident District Commissioner for Rukungiri District, Brone Kyikanshemeza, during the commissioning of completed government projects, including a two-classroom block at Mabanga Primary School in Kebisoni Sub-county worth 94 million, and a two-classroom block at St. Joseph’s Katojo Primary School in Buyanja Town Council worth 102 million.

Kyikanshemeza appealed to parents not to assume that children are solely the government’s responsibility, but to also take ownership. He also urged headteachers not to send pupils away over school fees, which can prevent them from sitting exams due to lack of money.

He further encouraged parents to take the initiative to visit schools and supervise ongoing projects, as well as work together with school authorities, noting that a child’s success requires collective effort.

Solomon Arinaitwe, the Inspector of Schools for Rukungiri District, representing the DEO, applauded the government for providing funds to the schools, which needed support in terms of infrastructure to create a better learning environment for pupils.

He also appealed to parents to utilize the improved infrastructure by sending their children to school and helping with maintenance, noting that such developments aim to improve academic performance in government schools.

The headteachers of the two schools, Birungyi George of St. Joseph’s Katojo Primary School and Darius Amutuhaire of Mabanga Primary School, applauded the NRM government for the support rendered through improved infrastructure. They also appealed for more support, as pupil numbers continue to increase.
