Residents and local leaders of Nyarushanje Subcounty are raising alarm over the deteriorating condition of the Nyakatunga-Kyinanira-Omukyihogo road, which has made transportation to market centers increasingly difficult. They blame delays by the government to repair the road.

Speaking to our reporter, Burora Parish Councilor Edison Bijonde said the road is riddled with potholes, particularly in the section just after the Rukungiri-Kisiizi road, making movement challenging. He attributed part of the problem to a decline in communal work, noting that local leadership, led by LC1 chairpersons, no longer actively mobilizes residents to maintain the road.

Didas Makubuya, LC1 Chairperson of Kabashure Cell, linked the road’s poor condition to the dilapidated bridge, which he said the government has neglected. He described a stretch of the road that has turned “like a sweet potato garden,” causing frequent accidents, particularly among boda boda riders. Makubuya also noted that poor road conditions have slowed market activity, as transportation of goods has become increasingly difficult.

Nyarushanje Subcounty LC3 Chairperson Michael Musiime added that the road’s location on Inhunga Mountain has worsened its condition. He cited environmental degradation as a key factor, with soils unable to retain water, further damaging the road during rainy seasons. Musiime acknowledged the challenge of limited government funding for road maintenance but assured residents that repairs are planned for the next financial year. He also urged communities to engage in communal work while awaiting government intervention.

The worsening road conditions continue to pose a serious challenge to residents’ mobility, access to markets, and general safety in the area.
