Parents at Kajumba Jumba Primary School in Kyafoora Parish, Rugarama North Sub-County, Ntungamo District, protested today, Wednesday 19th November 2025, over the strange illness affecting their children, which they say followed deworming conducted by health workers.

Three weeks ago, health workers from Kyafoora Health Center II, conducting a district program, supplied deworming tablets to 168 pupils at Kajumba Jumba Primary School. Upon leaving, 60 pupils started fainting and vomiting.

They were initially treated with milk and water, but the situation persisted, requiring drips that provided only temporary relief.

Rhona Twongyeirwe, Robert Mugabe, Meburo Kobusingye, Andrew Kakuru, and Joseph Mutungi, parents, narrated the conditions affecting their children, including difficulty breathing, fainting, and instant urination. They also complained of neglect by health authorities and abusive communication with patients and parents.

Hilda Naturinda, a parent and teacher at the school, reiterated the harassment children experienced at Kyafoora Health Center II, which was declared as the treatment center, and expressed concern about using one strip of medication for many children, putting their lives at risk.

James Abaho, the school headteacher, clarified the lack of trust in the guidance provided by health officials, after they assured recovery within 14 days—a claim that failed—while referrals indicated possible transmission to the brain, taking parents for granted.

Ivan Amanya Rwanyakibale, the Chairperson LC3, Rugarama North, emphasized that parents are angry and depressed due to neglect, calling on the Ministry of Health to deploy qualified experts to ensure proper treatment and normal recovery. He also urged Members of Parliament to present the matter in Parliament.

Dr. Beatrice Chemisto, the Assistant District Health Officer for Ntungamo, responded that the condition was being managed and attributed the protest to being fueled by non-parents.
