Saccos in Kanungu District have been urged to strengthen sensitization and mobilization efforts as a strategy to boost membership and improve overall performance.

The call was made by CPA Asiimwe Ivan, General Secretary of the Uganda Cooperative Alliance, while presiding as chief guest at the 23rd Annual General Meeting of Kidefise Sacco held on March 21, 2026, at the Sacco headquarters in Kanungu Town Council.

Asiimwe noted that many Saccos struggle due to limited member awareness about the importance of saving and the productive use of loans. He emphasized the need for continuous sensitization and encouraged Sacco leaders to intensify outreach programs, including village visits, to attract and educate more members.

He also commended Kidefise Sacco leadership for its dedication, attributing the institution’s growth and positive impact on both members and the wider community to strong leadership and commitment. Asiimwe further appreciated the government, led by President Yoweri Museveni, for supporting Saccos through initiatives such as the ten-year tax exemption policy.

The Chairperson of the Board, Atuhaire Innocent, acknowledged challenges including multiple borrowing, loan defaults, and a weak saving culture among some members. Despite these setbacks, he said the Sacco has registered significant growth, including increased membership, expansion through new branches and outreach programs, and the construction of a new main office building. He credited this progress to the commitment of members and effective leadership.

Financially, the Sacco has recorded notable performance, with its loan portfolio growing to 7.4 billion shillings and profits exceeding 600 million shillings. Additionally, it has saved 900 million shillings with Centenary Bank as a safeguard against unforeseen circumstances.

Atuhaire emphasized the need for continued member education, particularly in promoting a saving culture and ensuring that loans are invested in viable, appraised projects.

The Sacco’s General Manager, Tumuhimbise Deus, highlighted new initiatives aimed at improving member welfare, including the introduction of the Kidefise Sacco Bataka Scheme, which provides one million shillings in condolence support to the family of a deceased member. He also revealed that the interest rate on loans has been reduced from 3 percent to 2 percent to make credit more affordable and manageable for members.

Meanwhile, the Assistant Resident District Commissioner for Kanungu, Magezi Emmy Ryarugaba, applauded the Sacco leadership for their hard work and commitment. He cautioned members against engaging in multiple borrowing and advised Saccos to ensure timely disbursement of loans. He also reaffirmed government support, through the President’s Office, towards the growth and sustainability of Saccos.
