The 13th edition of the JOVOC Open basketball tournament is set to ignite the courts this year, with Headmaster Rev. Fr. Katono Christopher confirming that St. Joseph’s Vocational School (JOVOC) is more than prepared to host competing institutions. “We are very prepared, the courts are already marked, the boys are doing practice and not only here but the invited schools are also preparing,” Katono revealed in an interview with reporters.

Invitations have been sent out to various schools, and the response has been overwhelmingly positive. “We sent invitations and schools are responding positively. Our partners, especially the sponsors, are replying very well and I think we shall not make many expenses since they have helped us and supported us,” Katono added, highlighting strong sponsorship backing that will keep the event financially smooth.

The tournament also carries a meaningful social message. According to JOVOC head coach and tournament organizer Alex Byamukama, the event has become a platform to “spread the basketball gospel” in the western region, inspiring young athletes and promoting sportsmanship.

This year’s JOVOC Open is themed “Driving Towards TB Awareness and Education,” partnering with the Ministry of Health to use the sports event for community health messaging. The one‑day competition will bring together schools from across Uganda to compete on the newly prepared courts at JOVOC, promising an exciting display of talent and teamwork.

Organizers are optimistic about the turnout and the impact the tournament will have on both basketball development and public health awareness in the region.
