Health experts have urged the public to take memory loss seriously, emphasizing that it is a real medical condition that requires immediate medical attention.

This call was made by Rukungiri District Health Educator Alban Natukunda in an exclusive interview with our reporter.

Natukunda explained that amnesia is not just ordinary forgetfulness, but can be a symptom of serious underlying medical problems such as brain injury, stroke, infections, or even a side effect of certain medications.

He noted that memory loss can cause confusion and disorientation, making it difficult for a person to know their location or even seek medical care. He added that in some cases, the condition may be Transient Global Amnesia (TGA), a temporary form of amnesia that resolves within 24 hours. However, he stressed that even sudden short-term memory loss must be medically evaluated to rule out more serious conditions.

Natukunda further highlighted that amnesia can be triggered by several causes, including brain damage, nutritional deficiencies (such as lack of vitamin B12, folate, or thiamine), long-term alcohol abuse, excessive blood loss, or medical conditions affecting red blood cell production and brain function.

He advised the public to take preventive measures against amnesia by:

  • Protecting against head trauma by wearing helmets while cycling and seat belts while driving.
  • Limiting alcohol consumption, since excessive intake is linked to thiamine (Vitamin B1) deficiency that can damage memory.
  • Treating infections promptly, as untreated infections can spread to the brain.
  • Managing health conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesterol which may increase the risk of amnesia.

In his conclusion, Natukunda reminded people to maintain a healthy lifestyle through a balanced diet, regular physical exercise, and sufficient sleep of 7–9 hours for adults, all of which support good brain health.
