Elderly women residing along the Omukiyenje – Kisiizi road in Nyarushanje Sub County, Rukungiri District, have expressed dissatisfaction with the mistreatment they endure from lorry porters in the area. The road is frequented by a significant number of lorries transporting various goods such as sand, bricks, timber, charcoal, wood, coffee, and food items. Unfortunately, the porters on these lorries engage in disrespectful and abusive behavior towards women along the route, using vulgar and offensive language.
Some anonymous individuals have disclosed that the attacks often take a distressing turn, with elderly women being subjected to sexually suggestive remarks. Nuwagaba Goodluck, a lorry driver plying the road, has condemned this behavior, attributing it to the lack of discipline among the younger porters.
Musiime Micheal, the Chairperson of LC3 Nyarushanje Sub County, has acknowledged the existence of this problematic habit.
He has given assurance that the issue will be brought to the attention of a Security meeting for appropriate action.
