Territorial police in Rukiga District have launched a manhunt for an unknown assailant following the gruesome murder of a 70-year-old woman.

The deceased, identified as Busingye Domitiria, a resident of Butobere Cell, Nyakanengo Ward in Muhanga Town Council, was allegedly killed on the night of May 5, 2026, at around 9:44 PM at her home.

According to preliminary police reports, the incident is believed to have occurred earlier that evening at about 8:25 PM. It is alleged that Domitiria was in her kitchen preparing supper when she instructed her four grandchildren, with whom she lived, to go to the main house and wash their feet.

Shortly after entering the house, the children reportedly heard their grandmother raising an alarm outside. Attempts to rush to her rescue were unsuccessful as the attacker had locked them inside the house. The children also raised an alarm, attracting the attention of a neighbor, identified as Kyomuhendo Joy.

As she responded, the neighbor reportedly encountered an unidentified man, dressed in a grey jacket with his head covered, fleeing from the scene towards a nearby banana plantation. She raised further alarm, drawing more residents who later rescued the children.

Upon checking the kitchen, the elderly woman was found lying in a pool of blood, having sustained multiple fatal cuts to the head.

The matter was reported to Muhanga Police Station, and officers promptly responded to the scene. Police documented and processed the scene, recorded statements from relevant witnesses, and conducted a postmortem examination at the scene.

However, authorities noted that the crime scene had already been tampered with by the time police arrived, which may complicate investigations.

Police have appealed to the public to provide any information that could help identify and apprehend the suspect.

Investigations into the matter are ongoing according to ASP Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson.
