Police in Kisoro District have arrested 16 girls in connection with the abandonment of a dead baby found near their hostel.
The suspects, whose names have been withheld, were detained by officers from Gatimba Community Police Post in Kisoro Municipality. The arrests were made following the discovery of a deceased baby in a nearby plantation, with parts of the body reportedly eaten by dogs.
The baby was found near the suspects’ residence in the Nalongo Building, located in Kamonyi Village, Northern Division, Kisoro Municipality.
OC Kalan Zadok of Gatimba Community Police Post, along with Daud Line, the LC1 Chairperson of Kamonyi Village, noted that this was not the first time a dead baby had been found in the area. Zadok urged young girls to use condoms as a preventive measure during sex to avoid unwanted pregnancies and the potential dangers of illegal abortion procedures.
Daud Line expressed concern about the presence of unregistered individuals in his village and called on sex workers in the area to register for proper accountability. He emphasized the importance of safe childbirth for pregnant girls and discouraged the promotion of abortion as a solution.
