In a devastating incident that occurred at Kazigazigye Kitumba along the Kabale Katuna highway in Kabale district, a black-colored motor vehicle with the registration UAN 831H, reportedly driven by an unknown individual, caused a severe accident. The incident took place at around 05:00 PM on Sunday.
The victims, identified as passengers in the ill-fated vehicle, include Juliet Tuhirwe (49), residing in Rwancerere Butanda; Justine Baryajunaki (62) from Ntugamo village Butanda; Natukunda Diana (38) of Kigarama Ryakarimira sub-county; Irene Muhanuka (60) from Rwancerere Butanda; Jackline Bafaki (57) of Kinyamari Bushara, Butanda; and Amanya Gilian (7) from Kinyamari Katoma Butanda. All the victims were promptly rushed to a nearby clinic for medical attention.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the driver of the UAN 831H vehicle, traveling from Kabale town to Butanda, lost control due to speeding, veering off the road and colliding with a fence. Unfortunately, the driver is currently on the run.
The local police, represented by PC Nampa and assisted by PC Buregeya, visited the scene to assess the situation. The motor vehicle, UAN 831H, has been towed and is currently parked at Kabale CPS pending further inspection by the investigators.
Authorities suspect that over-speeding was the primary cause of the accident.
Efforts are underway to trace the whereabouts of the unidentified driver.
