The Rukungiri Municipal Town Clerk, Mr. Isiah Tumwesigye, has confirmed that plans for constructing a pit latrine at the Rukungiri Main Stadium in Rwakabengo Ward, Southern Division, have been changed following public protests and pressure from local authorities.

Mr. Tumwesigye said that after consultations with relevant stakeholders, the construction venue has been moved to a more suitable location near the Rukungiri High School premises. In addition, the project has been upgraded from a simple pit latrine to a modern waterborne flush toilet.

He explained that the decision was partly influenced by the upcoming road project connecting Katerera to Rwakabengo (Mukihindi) under the Uganda Cities and Municipal Development Program (USMID), which would have affected existing latrines in the area. Mr. Tumwesigye also noted that improving sanitation facilities around the stadium aligns with plans to renovate and upgrade the facility in future budgets.

Southern Division Mayor, Mr. Ngabirano Denis, welcomed the decision, acknowledging the role of public feedback and municipal council input in reshaping the project. “The initial plan for a pit latrine at the stadium had raised concerns among residents and council members. The revised plan for a modern waterborne toilet at an alternative site ensures better sanitation and respects public sentiment,” he said.

A harmonization meeting involving the RDC, CAO, Municipal Mayor, Town Clerk, and the Division Mayor was initially scheduled this week to finalize the venue and contracts. However, it has been postponed due to a municipal council study tour in Kasese.

The switch to a modern waterborne facility is seen as a step toward improving public sanitation and supporting the municipality’s ongoing development programs.
