Members of the Rukungiri chapter of Manchester United fans have today extended a helping hand to pupils in Universal Primary Education (UPE) schools across the district by donating scholastic materials, in a gesture aimed at supporting needy learners during the Christian Lenten season.

The charitable initiative was led by the group’s chairperson, Mr. Karyeija Zepha Byarugaba, alongside Vice Chairperson Mr. Tugumisirize Henry. The donation exercise targeted Primary Six and Primary Seven pupils, equipping them with essential learning materials to support their academic journey.

According to the leaders, the items—including mathematical sets, exercise books, pens, and erasers—were procured through voluntary contributions from members of the Manchester United Fans Association in Rukungiri.

The distribution was conducted across three counties in the district, with members divided into teams covering Rujumbura County, Rukungiri Municipality, and Rubabo County. Beneficiary schools included Kanyankyende Primary School in Bugangari Sub-county, Kanombe Primary School in Buyanja Sub-county, Nyabihinga Primary School in Eastern Division, and Katwekamwe Primary School in Rukungiri Municipality.

Speaking to journalists, Mr. Byarugaba emphasized that the group has consistently engaged in charitable activities, particularly during the Lenten period. He noted that in previous years, the association has supported vulnerable communities by donating food items and contributing chairs to local churches, including Christ the King Church and Rukungiri All Saints Church.

“This time, we chose to focus on supporting pupils in upper primary classes by providing them with scholastic materials to boost their academic performance,” he said.

Vice Chairperson Mr. Tugumisirize echoed the commitment, highlighting that the group remains dedicated to extending compassion and support to those in need. He added that their efforts have previously included building houses for the homeless and supporting disadvantaged families.

He also encouraged fellow football fans to go beyond mere support of their favorite teams and instead use such platforms to unite, cooperate, and initiate community development projects.

“Supporting football should not just be about cheering teams. It should bring people together to create meaningful change in society,” he said.

The donation was warmly received by pupils, teachers, and parents, who expressed gratitude and appreciation for the timely support. At Katwekamwe Primary School, Deputy Headteacher Mrs. Macklynss Musimeenta commended the fans for their generosity, noting that the materials would greatly benefit candidate classes preparing for their final exams.

The initiative stands as a strong example of how sports communities can positively impact society by giving back and supporting education at the grassroots level.
