The Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) of Rukungiri District, Fredrick Byekwaso, has urged the government to increase funding for tourism to support the growth and development of the sector in the district.

Byekwaso made the appeal on March 25, 2026, during his familiarization tour of tourism sites in Rubabo County. The tour, conducted alongside the District Tourism Officer, heads of departments, and development partners, aimed at assessing the condition of key tourism attractions and identifying areas that need improvement.

Among the sites visited were Rubabo Hot Springs in Nyabushenyi Parish, Lake Kimbugu in Kiganga Parish, Kisiizi Waterfalls in Ibanda Parish, Mineera Hot Springs in Southern Ward of Kebisoni Town Council, and Lake Nakasanda, commonly known as Garubunda, in Kebisoni Sub-county. The team noted several gaps that require attention to enhance the appeal and sustainability of these sites.

Byekwaso commended the government for its efforts in promoting tourism in the district but emphasized the need for increased financial support, particularly for sites that remain underdeveloped and neglected.

Rukungiri District Secretary for Commerce and Tourism, Musimenta Claire Caledonia, proposed the installation of a landmark portrait at the district roundabout. She explained that the display would showcase the district’s economic activities and highlight wildlife found in Queen Elizabeth National Park, thereby raising public awareness and promoting tourism.

The District Tourism Officer, Onyete Beingana, raised concern over poor waste management at some tourism sites, condemning the dumping of garbage and warning against human activities that degrade the environment. He stressed the importance of preserving these natural resources to ensure their long-term value.

Development partners also called for stronger efforts in promoting tourism and safeguarding the sites. Racheal Atwendize from Heritage Country Club and Nightngeru Tusiime from Garubunda Beach Resort emphasized the need for increased awareness campaigns and the implementation of effective protection measures to sustain tourism growth in the district.
