The Rukungiri District Secretary for Education, Commercial Services, and Tourism, Musiimenta Keredonia Bakironda, has urged parents, especially those whose children completed Senior Four in 2024, not to impose subject combinations or courses on them as they pursue further studies.

Speaking to our reporter yesterday, Keredonia noted that some parents force their children into specific-level’ level subject combinations, which lowers their morale and affects their academic performance.

She further explained that this pressure not only impacts a student’s education but also pushes them into careers they are not passionate about, leading to poor performance in the workplace.

Keredonia encouraged the youth to look beyond white-collar jobs and consider hands-on vocational courses such as motor vehicle mechanics, plumbing, electrical installation, building, tailoring, and catering. She emphasized that such skills could help create more job creators rather than job seekers in Uganda.

She also highlighted that 2024 marked the first year of implementing the new curriculum by the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB). According to her, the government introduced this curriculum to equip young Ugandans with practical skills that would enable them to earn a living in the future.

Additionally, Keredonia criticized parents who refuse to support their children’s education beyond Senior Four, believing it to be sufficient. She stressed that in today’s Uganda, completing Senior Four is not enough and urged parents to ensure their children continue their studies.

She attributed the increasing levels of delinquency among youths to the fact that many drop out at lower educational levels, limiting their opportunities and leading them to engage in criminal activities.
