The Chairperson of LC5 for Ntungamo District, Macunguzi Samuel, has given hope to traders in livestock and related products, announcing that the animal quarantine due to foot-and-mouth disease will be partially lifted within a week, depending on vaccination targets.

Samuel made these remarks while speaking to Boona FM at the Ntungamo District headquarters. He explained that the first cases of foot-and-mouth disease were reported in Nyamukana and Kyafoora, prompting a quarantine within a 20-kilometer radius of those affected areas. Subsequently, the government extended the quarantine to all districts in Ankole. The Ministry provided 60,000 doses for vaccination, but delays in the vaccination process have complicated efforts to lift the quarantine before all animals are vaccinated.

He emphasized the need for all markets in Ntungamo District to be reopened by Monday, October 14, as many residents rely on livestock for their livelihoods. He vowed to take decisive action to ensure that all animals are vaccinated this week, allowing the markets to reopen by Monday.

Samuel expressed his frustration that while other markets are operational, trucks are frequently seen transporting animals to markets in neighboring districts, leaving Ntungamo still under quarantine.

He noted that the people of Ntungamo are facing significant poverty-related challenges, and the solution is straightforward: the district has sufficient doses available, and the vaccination must be completed by the end of this week to facilitate the reopening of markets.
