Authorities in Mbarara City have unveiled new measures aimed at improving safety and regulating nightlife operations in Katete Ward, including the planned registration of all barmaids and a crackdown on the employment of underage girls in bars and lodges.

The resolutions were reached during a security meeting convened by the Mayor of Mbarara City South Division, Jomo Mugabi, at the division headquarters in Kakoba. The meeting brought together bar and lodge owners from Katete Ward to address growing security concerns, including cases of murder and violent robbery.

As part of the new strategy, bar and lodge operators have been encouraged to form organized groups with designated leaders. These groups will work closely with security agencies by discreetly gathering and sharing information from workers and trusted community members to help identify and report suspected criminal activity.

Leaders say the initiative is part of broader efforts to enhance public safety while promoting responsible business practices within the hospitality sector.

Speaking after the meeting, Mayor Mugabi emphasized that the measures are intended to streamline bar operations and reduce crime in the area. He also raised alarm over reports that some establishments are employing girls as young as 14, warning that such practices expose minors to significant danger and must be stopped.

Authorities believe the new measures will not only strengthen security but also protect vulnerable individuals and promote a safer environment for both residents and businesses in Katete Ward.
