Students have been urged to embrace debate as one way of building confidence and sharpening their minds for leadership in the near future.

These remarks were made by the Headmaster of Kyamakanda Secondary School, Turyamusima David Kapira, during inter-house debate competitions involving Moonsun, Juvenus, Marsta, and Earthmerc, where Juvenus House emerged the winner with 494 points.

He further urged students to maintain discipline as the term begins in order to attain the best performances in class, noting that it is the sole reason parents brought them to school.

Rauben Behangana, Patron of the Debate Club at Kyamakanda Secondary School and CEO of Zeal Epitomized Debate Society (ZEDS), thanked the administration for the discipline portrayed during the competitions.

He further urged students to join the debating club as it takes them to different places—like last year when they went to Masaka and Kigali in Rwanda for debate competitions—adding that debate boosts academic performance in all subjects, especially English.

Nathan Tumwesigye Twiine, Deputy Headteacher in charge of Welfare and Co-curricular activities, in his speech thanked the administration for facilitating debate programs, saying the intention is to build confidence in students as they stand in public and to help them think widely about what is happening in the country.

He further urged those who have not yet joined debate to do so, pointing out that last year students of the debate club at Kyamakanda Secondary School went to Kigali, Rwanda, and still emerged winners.

Rubby Ainomugyisha, a Senior Four student at Kyamakanda Secondary School and a debater, thanked the Patron, Mr. Behangana Rauben, for the time he invests in them during practices and for bringing them trainers. She urged fellow students to join the debate club as there is a lot to learn, such as public speaking, building confidence, and gaining different skills to help them both in and out of school.
