The Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Kanungu, Mr. Ambrose Mwesigye, has today issued a stern warning to leaders of Emyoga SACCOs over the mismanagement of funds. The caution came during a meeting held at the Kanungu District Council Hall, aimed at reviewing the performance of these savings and credit cooperative societies.

Mr. Mwesigye noted that some SACCO leaders have been using funds for personal gain, undermining the objectives of the program. He reminded members that the funds are not government grants and emphasized that anyone misusing the money is expected to repay it so that it can benefit other community members.

The RDC also condemned the practice of circulating funds among the same group of individuals. He stressed that the program is intended to reach all people in the district and urged SACCO leaders to register new members to ensure broader participation.

Addressing the challenge of loan defaulters, Mr. Mwesigye vowed that his office is committed to addressing the issue. He warned that defaulters who fail to repay their loans before Easter may face detention.

In the same meeting, Kanungu’s Commercial Officer, Atuhaire Mark, called on SACCO leaders to compile proper reports to ensure accountability. He also announced plans to officially register the SACCOs with the Registrar of Cooperatives, which will allow them to operate formally.

Despite challenges such as loan defaults, limited facilities, and transportation issues, many SACCO leaders commended the program, noting that it has contributed to improving livelihoods across the district.
