The Territorial Police in Kanungu District are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 25-year-old man, Augustine Matinisa, a resident of Kishojwa Cell, Northern Ward, Kanungu Town Council. Matinisa was reportedly assaulted by his employer, Safina, along with her workers, after being accused of stealing scrap materials.
The incident occurred on the night of September 2, 2024, at around 9:00 PM in Kanungu Town Council. After the assault, Matinisa was taken to Makiro Health Center III for treatment. When his condition worsened, he was referred to Kambuga Referral Hospital on September 16, 2024, where he succumbed to his injuries in the early hours of September 18, 2024, at around 3:00 AM.
The incident was reported to Kanungu Central Police Station by Rose Kyomuhendo, a scrap dealer. The police visited and documented the scene, and a postmortem was conducted at Kambuga Hospital. The suspects remain at large as investigations continue. The body of the deceased was handed over to his relatives for burial.
Kigezi Region Police spokesperson, ASP Elly Maate, confirmed the incident and stated that efforts to apprehend the suspects are ongoing.
