Residents and local leaders in Kanungu are mourning the death of Elias Kanyonza Jameson, LC3 chairperson of Rugyeyo Sub-county.

Kanyonza, who has been serving as the LC3 chairperson of Rugyeyo Sub-county, breathed his last yesterday at Namirembe Hospital in Mukono District, where he had been rushed for treatment.

Kanyonza joined politics in 1996, when he was first elected as the Youth Chairperson for Rugyeyo Sub-county, and was later elected LC3 chairperson for Rugyeyo Sub-county after Kanungu was declared a district in 2001, a position he has been serving in.

Many leaders and residents described Kanyonza as a committed, straightforward, and dedicated person in his work.

Hon. Chris Baryomusi, Member of Parliament for Kinkiizi East and Minister of ICT and National Guidance, in a message shared on his social media, described Kanyonza as a dedicated leader and devoted servant to his community, noting that his efforts improved the livelihoods of people across the district.

Other leaders, including Mwogyera Henry, Vice Chairperson of Kanungu District, and Ahimbisibwe Annet, Woman District Councillor for Nyakabungo and Rugyeyo Sub-counties, stressed that Kanyonza has been an inspiration to many young leaders and that the district will live to remember his legacy and dedication to leadership.

In a council meeting held today at the District Council Hall, councillors observed a moment of silence in honour of the late Kanyonza and agreed to hold a Sub-county council sitting in Rugyeyo as a token of appreciation for his commitment to district development.

Kanyonza will be laid to rest on Thursday, 2nd April 2026, at his ancestral home in Kabahesi Cell, Kashojwa Parish, Rugyeyo Sub-county, Kanungu District.
