Kanungu District has proposed a 62.9 billion budget for the upcoming financial year 2026/2027. The budget was unveiled today during a council meeting held at the District Council Hall, Kanungu District headquarters, with various district stakeholders in attendance.
The meeting was presided over by Deputy Speaker and Woman Councillor for the Workers League, Kyasiimire Evelyne, who revealed that the district plans to spend Shs 62,967,214,000 in the upcoming financial year compared to 60.2 billion that was proposed last year. She explained that the budget was laid before the councillors for review and will be approved in the next council meeting, whose date will be communicated.
The Education Department took the lion’s share with over 27.5 billion, equivalent to 43.81%, followed by the Health Department with over 13.7 billion, equivalent to 21.86%.
Other allocations included the Administration Department with 10.3 billion, Production and Marketing Department with 4.4 billion, Roads and Engineering with 1.8 billion, Natural Resources Management with 1.8 billion, Statutory Bodies and Commissions with 1.2 billion, Community-Based Services with 495.2 million, Water with 387.0 million, Planning with 315.3 million, Finance with 364.0 million, Trade, Industry and Local Development with 208.3 million, and lastly Internal Audit with 143.6 million.
The budget is expected to promote commercial agriculture, industrial development, improve market access, digital transformation, and enhance employment and wealth creation across the district.
