A fire outbreak on Monday night caused significant damage to a boys’ dormitory at Child Care Nursery and Primary School in Kabale District, but no lives were lost.

According to Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police spokesperson, the incident occurred at around 9:00 p.m. in Karukoba Cell, Ntarabana Parish, Buhara Sub-county.

Police received a report via telephone from the school director, Innocent Mbeinenamukama, alerting authorities to the fire outbreak. A fire brigade team led by SP Muhanguzi Moses, with Sgt. Bikorwomuhangi Andrew as the driver, promptly responded to the scene.

Upon arrival, the fire had already engulfed one of the rooms on the third floor, which was being used as a boys’ dormitory. Firefighters managed to extinguish the blaze, preventing it from spreading to the rest of the building and nearby structures.

Despite the swift response, the fire caused severe damage to the dormitory and its contents, including beds, mattresses, clothing, and books. The cost of the damage is estimated at approximately 30 million Ugandan shillings.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the fire was likely caused by a short circuit.

Several individuals, including the school headteacher, teachers, and local residents, were present at the scene during the incident.

Authorities have commended the fire brigade for their quick intervention, which helped save the larger school structure and surrounding property.

Police say inquiries into the incident are ongoing.
