Farmers in Rwanyakahimbi Cell, Kyaruyenje Parish, Buhunga Sub County, Rukungiri District are frustrated by the persistent infestation of Banana Rust Thrips, which has negatively impacted food security and income.
The Banana Rust Thrips outbreak began in 2020, causing significant losses for farmers. Infected banana bunches have become unsellable and unpalatable, leading to a reduced market.
Affected banana plants show symptoms such as yellow or rust-colored streaks, brown spots on leaves and stems reduced fruit production and quality, and premature fruit ripening.
Peter Twinamatsiko, a local farmer, expressed his concern over the declining banana market due to the infection, compounded by a recent destructive hailstorm, which has further intensified farmers’ challenges.
Posiano Twinomugisha, the LC1 Chairperson of Rwanyakahimbi Cell, stated that the bananas are no longer edible and lamented the lack of guidance and advisory support for farmers.
Benon Mugisha, the LC3 Chairperson of Buhunga Sub County, highlighted the lack of awareness and emphasized the need for intervention from advisory service providers.
James Musimenta Mugisha, an agriculturalist with Rukungiri District Local Government, advised farmers to remain vigilant by removing infected leaves and stems, pruning to enhance air circulation, mulching to curb thrip migration, and planting resilient crops to avoid physical contact between banana plants. He outlined these preventive measures as essential to managing the spread of the disease.
