Residents of Omukibirizi Cell, Bwanga Parish, Nyarushanje Sub County, Rukungiri District, are thrilled about the recent repair of their long-awaited Borehole. The borehole, initially constructed by the District in 1991, had broken down in the early 2000s, leaving the community without access to clean water.
Katema Boaz, the landowner where the borehole is situated, expressed gratitude for the restoration of the essential water source. He highlighted the significance of now having access to safe and clean water, as the community had previously been relying on stagnant water from a nearby wetland contaminated by livestock. This repair brings relief to the residents who no longer have to compromise their health by using unsafe water sources.
Mwesigwa Mathias Rwabugumi, the District Councilor representing Nyarushanje Sub County and also serving as the District Secretary for Health, played a pivotal role in advocating for the borehole’s repair. He emphasized the importance of responding to the needs of the community and appealed for the sustainable maintenance of the newly restored water source.
Twekwatse Deus, the District Water Officer, shared that the rehabilitation of the Omukibirizi Borehole is part of a broader campaign to enhance community water coverage and supply in the region. Deus mentioned that a total of six boreholes are currently being rehabilitated across various Sub Counties, including Nyabiteete in Buyanja Sub County, Kikongi in Bwambara, Burama and Bugangari in Bugangari Sub County, and Nyakishenyi. He appealed for ongoing efforts to ensure the sustainability of these water sources, recognizing their critical role in improving the overall well-being of the communities involved.
