Residents of Rukungiri District have been urged to remain alert following reports of Ebola outbreaks in neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The call came from Rukungiri District Resident District Commissioner, Buron Kikashemeza, during an exclusive interview with our reporter. He emphasized the importance of vigilance, particularly when interacting with strangers, as a key measure in preventing the spread of Ebola.

“Uganda continues to receive refugees from Congo, where Ebola is prevalent. This means we are not entirely safe from the risk,” Kikashemeza cautioned.

He urged residents to report any suspicious individuals in their communities to local leaders or health authorities, warning that such persons could pose health risks. Kikashemeza also highlighted simple preventive measures, including regular hand washing with soap, especially when visiting healthcare facilities and public places.

Additionally, he warned against sharing items such as cups and utensils with strangers, particularly in health settings. He called on residents to stay alert and follow all health guidelines to protect themselves and their communities.
