Residents of Rukungiri District have been called upon to become “clean cooking champions” in a nationwide campaign aimed at tackling poverty, improving health, and protecting the environment. The campaign is spearheaded by the National Renewable Energy Platform (NREP) in partnership with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development (MEMD).

The initiative seeks to protect communities from the severe health risks associated with traditional cooking methods that rely on firewood and charcoal. These fuels not only cause dangerous indoor air pollution but also drive deforestation, posing a major threat to environmental conservation.

Dr. Paul Nduhuura of the National Renewable Energy Platform emphasized that adopting clean cooking technologies—such as electric pressure cookers, biogas, and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG)—can significantly reduce household fuel costs, save time, improve health, and contribute to Uganda’s sustainable development goals.

“The campaign is designed to empower families and institutions to transition from traditional cooking fuels to cleaner, safer, and more efficient alternatives,” Dr. Nduhuura said. “By embracing these technologies, households can protect themselves from air-pollution-related health problems while also conserving the environment.”

The engagement in Rukungiri served as both an educational forum and a call to action, urging local residents and institutions to adopt modern cooking solutions that safeguard human health and reduce environmental degradation.

Through this initiative, the government and its partners hope to accelerate the adoption of sustainable energy solutions in households and institutions across the country.
